Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], September 25: In an exciting international friendly held at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium, India managed to secure a 1-1 draw against Panama, thanks to Ryan Williams' goal in the first half.
Williams opened the scoring for India in the 41st minute, but Panama equalized with a spectacular long-range shot from Omar Valencia in the second half. This match was particularly significant as Panama is ranked much higher than India, according to Olympics.com.
The draw marks a positive outcome for Khalid Jamil's team against a Panama squad that is preparing for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. India, currently ranked 138th globally, played their first match in Bengaluru since clinching the SAFF Championship at the same venue earlier this year.
Although Panama dominated possession early on, India maintained a solid defensive structure and looked dangerous on counter-attacks.
India's first real chance came in the eighth minute when Akash Mishra's cut-back found Williams in the box, but he was unable to get a shot off. Williams had another opportunity shortly after, sending his effort just wide, while Ashique Kuruniyan also hit the side-netting as India began to find their rhythm.
India finally broke the deadlock just before half-time. Mishra delivered a perfectly timed ball, allowing Williams to evade the Panama defense. As goalkeeper Marcos Reyes approached, Williams kept his cool and slotted the ball into the net, giving India a 1-0 advantage.
After the break, Panama intensified their efforts and nearly equalized when Giovany Herbert tested Indian goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu five minutes into the second half, but Sandhu was up to the task.
Panama eventually leveled the score in the 68th minute, with Valencia unleashing a powerful shot from outside the box that left Gurpreet with no chance to save.
Following the equalizer, Panama sought a winning goal and even hit the woodwork, while Gurpreet was again called into action to keep the score level.
India, however, continued to threaten, with Manvir Singh coming close to regaining the lead after being set up by substitute Edmund Lalrindika, and Abhishek Singh Tekcham also missed a chance following a corner.
Ultimately, India held on for a draw in their first of three high-profile friendlies scheduled in preparation for the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup.
The Blue Tigers are set to face five-time world champions Brazil in Kolkata on October 3, followed by a match against Uruguay three days later.
