India and France Unite for Inclusive Education in Para Sports
Launch of Para Élan Initiative
The French Institute in India (IFI) has partnered with the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) to introduce Para Élan, a groundbreaking three-year initiative aimed at promoting inclusive education and empowering youth through para sports.
A formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by Satya Prakash Sangwan, Vice-President of PCI, and Gregor Trumel, Country Director of IFI, establishing a framework for this long-term collaboration.
The signing ceremony took place under the auspices of Thierry Mathou, the French Ambassador, who was joined by para-athletes and key stakeholders from both nations.
Ambassador Mathou expressed his support for the initiative, stating, “This MoU aligns perfectly with our sports diplomacy values, which focus on promoting sports through education and fostering an inclusive society for the youth. Over the next three years, we aim to engage around 10,000 students in partner schools of the French Institute in India through various activities and awareness programs about para sports.”
Satya Prakash Sangwan, Acting President of PCI, emphasized that Para Élan represents a significant step forward in enhancing inclusive education and para sports in India. He noted that this partnership is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision to empower para-athletes, ensuring that all individuals with disabilities in India have opportunities to participate.
The initiative aims to elevate India-France collaboration in para sports by embedding core values such as inclusion, resilience, equality, and excellence within educational frameworks. It will engage students through awareness campaigns, interactive workshops, athlete interactions, and inclusive sporting events across participating institutions.
Both organizations will have distinct yet complementary roles in executing the initiative. The French Institute will leverage its network of private and public partner schools to facilitate coordination and integrate inclusive sports values into its educational programs, including the French for All and French for a Better Future initiatives.
Meanwhile, the Paralympic Committee of India will lend its expertise in adaptive sports by creating tailored content for schools, deploying trained educators and para-athletes for demonstrations, and fostering Indo-French cooperation in para sports.
Parul Mahajan Oberoi from PCI, who is leading the initiative, remarked, “Para Élan is a vision realized—where collaboration meets purpose. Our goal is to inspire and empower the next generation while paving the way for a more inclusive future.”
Representatives from both organizations underscored the role of sports as a catalyst for social change and inclusion. This initiative embodies the shared commitment of India and France to provide equal opportunities and empower youth from diverse and marginalized backgrounds.
The program will be executed in partnership with prominent educational institutions, utilizing the expertise of para-athletes, educators, and international collaborators. It aims to create a lasting impact by raising awareness, promoting participation in adaptive sports, and instilling inclusive values within school communities.
