India and Australia Forge New Sports Collaboration Beyond Cricket
Strengthening Sports Ties Between India and Australia
India and Australia are poised to enhance their sports collaboration, extending beyond cricket with a comprehensive new strategy. This initiative, unveiled in Melbourne on Friday, emphasizes coach development, sports science, athlete support, youth exchanges, and collaboration on significant global sporting events.
The newly established India-Australia Roadmap for Sports Collaboration aims to strengthen connections among sporting institutions, athletes, universities, and industry organizations in both nations.
This roadmap emerges as both countries gear up for a pivotal decade in international sports. India is set to host the Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad in 2030, while Australia prepares for the Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2032. Additionally, New Delhi has shown interest in hosting a future Olympic and Paralympic Games.
A primary focus of this partnership will be enhancing sporting capabilities. Australia plans to share its expertise in establishing and managing high-performance sports centers in India, with coaches and educators from both nations participating in exchange programs.
The collaboration will also prioritize para sports, focusing on athlete classification, coaching, and performance support.
Furthermore, the roadmap suggests exchanges in physical education, enabling institutions from both countries to share insights and best practices in school sports, sports science, and community engagement. There will also be efforts to promote yoga and yogasana sports in Australia.
Indian athletes may gain improved access to high-performance programs in Australia, supported by scholarships from the Government of India and partnerships with sports organizations and universities.
Research collaboration is another key aspect of this initiative. Universities in both countries will be encouraged to collaborate on athlete performance analysis, injury prevention, sports nutrition, wearable technology, and recovery techniques. They will also explore the joint development of sports-related academic courses.
The two nations will collaborate on hosting major sporting events, sharing expertise and exploring exhibition matches and youth tournaments. Sports like kabaddi and kho kho could receive increased visibility in Australia, while Australian Rules football and basketball may find more opportunities in India.
The roadmap also underscores the expanding cricket partnership, welcoming the inaugural Big Bash League match in India, set for Chennai in December 2026. It encourages Cricket Australia and the Board of Control for Cricket in India to consider hosting annual BBL matches in India.
Beyond competitive sports, the partnership will extend to the sports industry, promoting collaboration in sports equipment manufacturing, broadcasting, event management, and sports technology startups. Both countries aim to boost trade in sports goods and share expertise in coaching, strength and conditioning, athlete wellbeing, nutrition, and psychology.
The roadmap places a strong emphasis on increasing women's participation in sports, with plans for joint initiatives focused on leadership, health, high performance, and expanding opportunities for female athletes.
Officials indicated that the roadmap will be executed through existing partnerships, with projects initiated based on available resources and timelines aligned with major sporting events.
