Impact of IPL on PSL: Player Transfers and Scheduling Conflicts
Overview of PSL and IPL Scheduling Issues
In recent seasons, the Pakistan Super League (PSL) has faced challenges as numerous players have opted to leave for the more lucrative Indian Premier League (IPL). Traditionally, the PSL runs from January to March, allowing it to finish before the IPL begins. However, in the past two years, the schedules have overlapped, raising significant concerns for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). Players in the PSL have been lured to switch teams, especially when opportunities arise in the IPL due to injuries or other vacancies.
With Pakistan hosting the Champions Trophy in February, the PSL was rescheduled to March-April in 2025, creating a direct clash with the IPL. This year, the PSL again found itself overlapping with the IPL due to adjustments made for the T20 World Cup scheduled for February and March.
Notable Player Transfers from PSL to IPL
Players Who Quit PSL For IPL
The first notable instance of a player leaving the PSL for the IPL occurred last year when South African Corbin Bosch, who was contracted with Peshawar Zalmi for approximately $85,000, withdrew to join the Mumbai Indians as an injury replacement for Lizaad Williams. The PCB deemed this a breach of contract and issued a legal notice. Bosch later expressed remorse but faced a one-year ban from the PSL, preventing his participation in PSL 2026.
Following Bosch's controversial exit, two more players have made the switch from PSL to IPL for the 2026 season. After the Kolkata Knight Riders released Mustafizur Rahman, Blessing Muzarabani, who had signed with Islamabad United, joined the IPL champions. Reports also indicate that Sri Lanka's Dasun Shanaka is set to join the Rajasthan Royals as an injury substitute for Sam Curran. If confirmed, this would further illustrate the negative impact of the PSL-IPL scheduling conflict.
Additionally, there are rumors of more players transferring from the PSL to the IPL. West Indies spinner Gudakesh Motie has reportedly withdrawn from the PSL, where he was slated to play for Lahore Qalandars, with speculation about a potential move to the Lucknow Super Giants. Australian fast bowler Spencer Johnson, signed by Quetta Gladiators, is also expected to leave the PSL, with rumors linking him to the Chennai Super Kings as a replacement for Nathan Ellis.
