Research Focus on Young Cricket Sensation

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, a 15-year-old cricket prodigy who made waves with his explosive batting in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, is set to be the subject of a significant study by the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Indore.

The research aims to investigate the effects of early fame and the associated pressures on the future of young talents. A senior official from IIM Indore confirmed this initiative on Tuesday, highlighting the focus on the Rajasthan Royals batter.

Sooryavanshi emerged as the leading run-scorer in the recent IPL season, accumulating 776 runs over 16 innings with an impressive strike rate of 237.30. His outstanding performance earned him the title of Most Valuable Player and the Orange Cap, thanks to a century and five half-centuries.

Himanshu Rai, the Director of IIM Indore, stated that the study will delve into not just the young cricketer's achievements on the field but also the various factors contributing to the development of talents who achieve remarkable success at a young age.

Rai expressed, “We aim to uncover the elements that fuel the exceptional performances of child prodigies. Key aspects such as personality, behavior, practice habits, and the support from parents, teachers, coaches, and mentors are vital for such success.”

He pointed out that while many young prodigies globally reach great heights early in their careers, they often encounter challenges related to wealth, fame, social media, and escalating expectations.

“Our research will also explore strategies to manage these expectations and challenges,” Rai added.

Sooryavanshi was chosen for this study due to cricket's immense popularity in India, where the pressure on young players is notably higher compared to other sports, according to the IIM Indore Director.

The left-handed batter from Bihar also shattered Chris Gayle's previous IPL record for the most sixes in a season, hitting 72 sixes in IPL 2026.

His fearless batting style against top bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah, Kagiso Rabada, and Pat Cummins has garnered widespread admiration.

The study will involve experts from various fields, including psychology, sociology, human resources, communication, and behavioral sciences, as stated by the IIM Director.

Set to commence in the next two weeks, the research is expected to conclude within three months.

Rai emphasized that the findings will extend beyond athletics, potentially benefiting talents in fields such as mathematics, science, and the arts who achieve early recognition.

The ultimate goal of the study is to formulate practical and policy recommendations that can support the holistic and sustainable growth of emerging talents in the future.

The results will be submitted to academic journals and shared with the Board of Control for Cricket in India, he noted.
