ICC Suspends Cricket Canada Amid Governance Breaches
ICC Takes Action Against Cricket Canada
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced the suspension of Cricket Canada due to violations of the national board's membership requirements. This decision comes shortly after the ICC's anti-corruption unit initiated an investigation into the operations of Cricket Canada.
Despite the suspension, the Canadian national team will still be eligible to compete in ICC events, and funding for team operations will be managed through a controlled process, as stated by the ICC on Monday.
In April, a documentary by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation raised serious allegations regarding corruption within Cricket Canada's governance, implicating various players and officials in issues such as match-fixing and threats of violence.
Following these allegations, media reports indicated that the ICC's anti-corruption investigation was promptly launched.
The ICC's board confirmed the immediate suspension of Cricket Canada, citing significant breaches of its membership obligations in a statement released after a meeting held in Ahmedabad, India.
To regain its membership, Cricket Canada must adhere to specific conditions designed to address its governance and administrative challenges, as outlined in the ICC's statement.
The ICC will oversee the progress towards meeting these conditions through its normalization committee, with reinstatement contingent upon the board's satisfaction that all requirements have been fulfilled.
Previously, the ICC also suspended USA Cricket for similar membership violations last year. Nevertheless, the US national teams are still allowed to participate in ICC events and are preparing for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
