Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], September 2: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has revealed a substantial increase in the prize money for the upcoming ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025, which is scheduled to take place later this month in India and Sri Lanka.
The total prize pool for this prestigious event has surged to 13.88 million USD, representing an impressive 297 percent rise compared to the last tournament held in New Zealand in 2022. Notably, this amount surpasses the men's event prize pool of 10 million USD from 2023.
Former Indian cricketer Jhulan Goswami expressed her excitement regarding this announcement during her debut on The ICC Review, featured on the ICC Hindi Instagram channel, where she will regularly contribute leading up to the tournament.
“I am getting goosebumps. The increased prize money is a very good thing,” Goswami remarked on this landmark announcement, as reported by the ICC.
“I would like to thank the ICC for this initiative. Their consideration for women’s cricket will undoubtedly provide a significant boost. It reassures parents of aspiring female cricketers that this sport can be pursued professionally. This is fantastic news for women’s cricket, and I believe it will inspire all players,” she added.
Jhulan holds the record for the most wickets in the tournament's history, with 43 wickets in 34 matches at an average of 21.74, boasting best figures of 4/16.
The champions of the tournament will receive 4.48 million USD, while the runners-up will take home 2.24 million USD, both reflecting an increase of over 200 percent from the previous edition. Each losing semifinalist will earn 1.12 million USD, and every team participating in the group stage is guaranteed 250,000 USD.
The fifth and sixth-placed teams will each receive 700,000 USD, while the seventh and eighth-placed teams will earn 280,000 USD each. Additionally, each group-stage victory will reward the winning team with 34,414 USD.
This announcement marks another pivotal step in the ICC's commitment to enhancing the growth of women's cricket and achieving pay equity with the men's game, as highlighted ahead of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024.
The tournament is set to kick off on September 30, with India facing Sri Lanka in Guwahati. The semifinals are planned for October 29 and 30, culminating in the final on November 2.
