Hugo Broos Announces Departure from Coaching Role

Cape Town [South Africa], July 10: Hugo Broos, the head coach of South Africa, has officially declared his decision to leave his full-time coaching position, marking a significant moment after the team reached the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time.

Broos mentioned that the South African Football Association is interested in keeping him involved in a different capacity, potentially as an advisor or scout. He plans to return at the end of July to discuss his future role and to say his goodbyes.

“Will I continue as a coach after all? No, it is irreversible! If they need me for something else, perhaps in scouting, that is something else. But football is no longer going to be a part of my life 24 hours a day,” Broos stated in an interview, as reported by a news outlet.

He also shared that he has had discussions with the chairman of the South African Football Association, who expressed a desire to retain him in a different role, possibly as an advisor. Broos is eager to see what proposals will be made when he returns.

Prior to the tournament, Broos had already indicated his intention to retire from coaching. Following South Africa's exit at the hands of co-hosts Canada in the Round of 32 on June 28, he reiterated his commitment to stepping away from coaching.

During his five-year tenure, Broos became South Africa's longest-serving head coach, successfully leading Bafana Bafana to their first FIFA World Cup qualification in 16 years.
