Hockey India Faces Backlash Over New Jersey Color

Hockey India is once again in the spotlight, this time due to its decision to alter the team's traditional blue jersey. This change comes on the heels of previous controversies involving allegations of sexual harassment and intimidation within the federation.

The newly introduced jersey is a vibrant orange, or saffron, which Hockey India claims represents 'courage, sacrifice, and national pride.'

However, this shift has not been well-received by fans and former players alike. Viren Rasquinha, a former captain, expressed his disappointment on social media, stating, 'Hockey India has accomplished many positive things for Indian hockey, but this is a misstep. The identity of the Indian team has always been BLUE. I proudly wore that jersey for years. Fans want to see our team in blue. What’s the reasoning behind orange?'

The controversy even reached Parliament, where opposition leaders voiced their concerns, suggesting that the Indian Army's uniform could be next in line for a color change. They accused the BJP and RSS of attempting to impose saffron across various domains.

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra claimed that this jersey change is indicative of a broader agenda by the BJP and RSS to alter the nation's identity and history. Congress MP Amar Singh warned that the BJP's influence could extend to the Army's uniform as well. TMC leader Kirti Azad also questioned the rationale behind replacing the iconic blue jersey.

In response to the backlash, Hockey India released a statement clarifying that the decision was made after discussions with players and coaching staff. They explained, 'The choice to change the uniform color was based on recommendations from our support staff and players after thorough consultations. The primary concern was technical; the blue uniform often blended with the blue synthetic playing surface, which is now standard in international hockey. This similarity impacted visibility on the field.'

The statement continued, 'In light of this, coaches and players proposed alternative colors like yellow or saffron. After careful evaluation, saffron was chosen. Besides meeting technical needs, saffron is also significant as one of the colors of our National Flag, symbolizing courage, sacrifice, and national pride.'
