Hockey India Unveils New Orange Jerseys Amid Controversy
Introduction of New Jersey Color
Bhubaneswar (Odisha) - On July 30, Hockey India President Dilip Kumar Tirkey addressed the recent decision to switch the primary jersey color of the Indian men's and women's hockey teams from blue to orange. This change was prompted by feedback from players, coaches, and support staff, who cited visibility challenges on the blue hockey turf.
Controversy Surrounding the Change
The alteration has stirred debate, with former Indian captain and Olympian Viren Rasquinha expressing his concerns, and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also voicing her disapproval of the decision.
Reasoning Behind the Color Shift
In an interview, Tirkey explained that the new jerseys were introduced in anticipation of the FIH Men’s and Women’s Hockey World Cups, set to commence on August 14 and 15 in the Netherlands and Belgium, respectively. He acknowledged the longstanding tradition of the blue jersey, stating, "For many years, Team India has donned blue, and I too have played in it. However, this change is not unprecedented; the team wore yellow in 2014 and light blue in 2018."
Visibility Concerns Addressed
Tirkey elaborated that players and coaches felt that wearing blue on a blue turf hindered visibility during matches. "The overlap of colors created issues in technical visibility during play," he noted.
Selection of Orange as the New Color
The team proposed two color options: yellow and orange. Ultimately, orange was chosen due to its representation in the Indian national flag. Tirkey mentioned, "If the players feel differently after the tournament, we can revisit the jersey color in the future."
Future Considerations
Tirkey assured that Hockey India would remain open to feedback from players regarding the jersey color. He reiterated that the decision was primarily based on visibility concerns and the preferences of the players.
Official Statement from Hockey India
Hockey India released a statement confirming that the decision to alter the national team's jersey color stemmed from recommendations made by the support staff and players after thorough discussions. The statement emphasized that the blue uniforms blended with the blue synthetic playing surface, impacting on-field clarity and visibility.
Historical Context of Jersey Changes
The organization highlighted that changes to the national team's jersey color are not new, referencing the yellow jersey used during the 2014 FIH Hockey World Cup and the sky blue jersey introduced in 2018. These modifications were made to meet functional requirements.
