Historic Victory for DR Congo as They Defeat Uzbekistan 3-1 in World Cup
DR Congo's Remarkable Comeback in Atlanta
Atlanta (Georgia) [US], June 28: The Democratic Republic of Congo achieved a remarkable second-half turnaround, overcoming Uzbekistan with a score of 3-1 in Atlanta. This victory marks their first-ever win in a FIFA World Cup match and secures their place in the knockout stages of the 2026 tournament.
Uzbekistan started strong and nearly took the lead within the first minute when their captain, Eldor Shomurodov, scored just 20 seconds into the match. However, the goal was disallowed after a review confirmed an offside.
Undeterred, the White Wolves continued to press and managed to score in the 10th minute. A miscommunication between defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka and goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi allowed Shomurodov to capitalize, as he skillfully placed the ball into the far corner from a challenging angle.
The Leopards responded with determination and thought they had equalized midway through the first half with a spectacular long-range shot from Nathanaël Mbuku. Unfortunately for them, a VAR review led referee Felix Zwayer to disallow the goal due to a foul in the buildup.
Despite controlling much of the possession, DR Congo struggled to create clear scoring opportunities before halftime, with captain Chancel Mbemba missing a late volley.
After the break, the African team came out with renewed vigor. Their efforts paid off just before the hour mark when Uzbekistan's Abdukodir Khusanov fouled Yoane Wissa in the penalty area. Wissa took the penalty and confidently leveled the score.
With a historic chance in sight, DR Congo pressed on. Their persistence was rewarded in the 78th minute when substitutes combined effectively. Meschak Elia's shot deflected, and Fiston Mayele cleverly redirected the ball into the net, igniting celebrations among the Congolese fans at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Any hopes of a comeback for Uzbekistan were dashed late in the game when Wissa scored again, delivering a precise finish from the edge of the box to complete his brace and secure a memorable 3-1 victory.
The final whistle brought jubilant scenes as DR Congo celebrated a significant milestone in their football history.
This win propels the Leopards into the World Cup knockout stage for the first time, where they will face England in the Round of 32. Uzbekistan, on the other hand, exits the tournament after their first World Cup appearance, gaining invaluable experience on the global stage.
