Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], September 7: Devajit Saikia, the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has described the upcoming T20 International match between India and Japan as a significant milestone, emphasizing that it represents a shift from a "global ambition" to a tangible reality for cricket.
On Friday, the Japan Cricket Association (JCA) and BCCI jointly announced that the men's teams from both nations will compete in a T20I match to commemorate the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Japan.
In a post on X, Saikia remarked that the evolution of cricket is being influenced by pivotal moments that extend the sport beyond its conventional limits.
He stated, "The India–Japan T20I match on September 22, 2026, is a landmark event that will introduce international cricket to Japan, engage a new audience, and enhance the sport's footprint in a region with vast potential."
Saikia acknowledged the foundational work done by Jai Shah, the current ICC Chairman, during his time as BCCI secretary, which has been crucial for the global expansion of cricket. He highlighted BCCI's duty to introduce the sport to "new countries, new communities, and new generations."
"Our goal has always been clear: to make cricket more accessible, inclusive, and genuinely global. As BCCI, we are committed to building on this foundation and continuing to expand the game into new territories. The India–Japan match signifies more than just a cricket game; it illustrates the trajectory of our sport from a global ambition to a global reality. This journey has commenced, and there is much more ahead," he concluded.

The match, dubbed 'The Suzuki Cup', is scheduled to be held at the Sano International Cricket Ground in Tochigi Prefecture on September 22, 2026.
As per the press release, this match marks the initial phase of the "Sport 75" initiative, which emerged from discussions between Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The initiative aims to foster human exchanges and collaboration between India and Japan in sports, especially in light of India's aspirations to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2036.
Naoki Miyaji, CEO of JCA, referred to India's visit to Japan as a historic occasion, expressing gratitude to the BCCI for their collaboration and inviting both Indian cricket enthusiasts and local Japanese fans to witness this momentous T20I.
