In their press release, Laureus praised the India women's team for their remarkable achievement, stating: “In their Cricket World Cup semi-final against Australia, the India Women's Cricket Team pulled off the highest successful run chase in women's ODI history (339) – before winning their first title against South Africa and are the first women's cricket team to be nominated for this Award.” This nomination is seen as a significant recognition for a team that has long sought greater acknowledgment in the sport.
Their World Cup victory sparked nationwide celebrations, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India announcing a cash reward of Rs 51 crore for the team in recognition of their historic success. The India women's cricket team is one of six nominees for the team award, alongside the England Women’s football team, the European Ryder Cup team, Paris Saint-Germain, McLaren Formula 1, and the NBA's Oklahoma City Thunder. This inclusion emphasizes the global impact of India's Women World Cup win.
Additionally, this nomination places the India women's team among a select group of Laureus nominees from India, joining the ranks of wrestler Vinesh Phogat (2019), javelin star Neeraj Chopra (2022), and wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant (2025). The winners will be determined by members of the Laureus World Sports Academy and announced during a gala ceremony at the Cibeles Palace in Madrid on April 20, marking the third consecutive year the awards will be held in the city.
