Indian Rowers Achieve Historic Victory
In a remarkable achievement, Army Chief General Dhiraj Seth honored Havildar Lakshay and Havildar Ujjwal Kumar Singh from the Army Rowing Node for securing India's inaugural Gold Medal at the World Rowing Cup. This victory took place in the Lightweight Men’s Double Sculls (LM2x) event held in Lucerne, Switzerland.
On June 27, the duo clinched the title in the men’s lightweight double sculls category at the 2026 World Rowing Cup III, finishing with an impressive time of 6:26.09, surpassing competitors from Hong Kong and the Netherlands.
This landmark victory is a significant milestone for Indian rowing and is anticipated to motivate aspiring athletes throughout the nation. Both Havildar Ujjwal Kumar Singh and Havildar Lakshay are active members of the Indian Army and represent the Army Rowing Node, which plays a crucial role in developing rowing talent.
The Indian Army took to X to celebrate this achievement, stating, “Historic! India’s First Ever. Hav Lakshay & Hav Ujjwal Kumar Singh (Army Rowing Node) won India’s first-ever World Rowing Cup gold in LM2x at Lucerne — 6:26.09. A proud moment for the Indian Army and the nation!”
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami also extended his congratulations to Lakshay and Ujjwal, describing their victory as a historic moment for Indian rowing. He emphasized their dedication and hard work, noting that this win showcases the sport's growing prominence in India.
