Historic FIFA World Cup 2026 Clash: France vs. Sweden Set for First Encounter
France and Sweden to Face Off in World Cup History
New Jersey [US], June 30: The FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 match between France and Sweden on June 30 (local time) will be a historic event, marking the first time these two nations meet in World Cup history.
Both teams have been prominent participants in football's premier tournament since its inception in 1930. France has played 76 matches, while Sweden has appeared in 54, yet they have never crossed paths in this prestigious competition, as noted on the FIFA website.
Back in 1958, a potential World Cup final featuring France, led by stars Raymond Kopa and Just Fontaine, against Sweden, with Nils Liedholm at the helm, seemed likely. However, a young Pele altered the course of events, leading Brazil to a 5-2 victory over France in the semi-finals, thus preventing that anticipated European clash.
Both nations have experienced golden eras and made significant impacts on World Cup lore, yet they have astonishingly never faced each other in the tournament. Their near encounters include Sweden finishing third in 1950 while France withdrew before the tournament began. In 1994, Sweden again secured third place after defeating Bulgaria, the team that had kept France from qualifying. France reached the finals in 1998, 2006, 2018, and 2022, while Sweden participated in the 2006 and 2018 tournaments but found themselves in different brackets.
Although they have not met at the World Cup, France and Sweden have had several memorable matches in other competitions. They played to a 1-1 draw at UEFA Euro 1992, and Sweden triumphed 2-0 at Euro 2012, thanks to a stunning volley from Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Additionally, they exchanged 2-1 victories during the qualifying rounds for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
As they prepare for their inaugural World Cup encounter, France enters the Round of 32 as one of the tournament favorites, having won all three of their group-stage matches and netting 10 goals. Sweden, on the other hand, advanced as one of the best third-placed teams and aims to create an upset against the strong French squad.
