Celebrating Women's Hockey Triumph

After the Indian women's hockey team clinched gold at the Asian Games, former captain Manpreet Singh joyfully called his mother, Manjit Kaur, exclaiming, 'Mother, are you watching the match? Baljeet and her team have won the gold!' This victory has brought immense pride to Mithapur, where families of male players are equally thrilled about the women's success.

Manjit Kaur expressed her excitement, stating, 'We are more thrilled for the girls this year. The boys have won medals before, but it's crucial for the girls to achieve this too. Our daughters have brought home the medal, and we couldn't be prouder.'

Udita Duhan, an Olympian and wife of Mandeep Singh, shared similar sentiments, celebrating both her husband's milestone of 300 caps and the women's historic win after 44 years. 'This is a double celebration for us, especially with both teams qualifying for the 2028 LA Olympics,' she remarked.

A Historic Double Win

The Asian Games 2026 marked a historic moment as both the Indian men's and women's hockey teams secured gold medals simultaneously. This achievement is particularly significant for the women's team, which had not won gold in 44 years.

For the residents of Mithapur, this victory is seen as a culmination of years of hard work and dedication. Udita Duhan is actively coaching local students, aiming to instill a passion for hockey in the next generation.

The camaraderie between the men's and women's teams, along with Udita's coaching efforts, has electrified the village, fostering a new culture of inclusivity in sports.

Community Engagement and Future Aspirations

The enthusiasm for hockey in Mithapur is palpable, with locals passionately supporting both men's and women's matches. Manjit Kaur and Devinderjit Kaur, Mandeep's mother, are just as invested in the women's games as they are in the men's.

Manpreet and Baljeet Kaur, who have been friends and teammates for years, are part of a legacy that began with the junior team’s success in 2016. This foundation has paved the way for the current generation of hockey stars.

Manjit Kaur emphasized the need for girls to participate in hockey, urging boys to invite them to the fields. She believes that Manpreet and Mandeep will play a crucial role in encouraging this change.

Coaching and Legacy in Mithapur

Balwinder Singh, an experienced coach, highlighted the influence of Pargat Singh in shaping the current generation of players. He noted that while men's hockey has seen success, the breakthrough for women's hockey has finally arrived, making this year particularly special.

Currently, 11 players from Mithapur are honing their skills in various academies, showcasing the village's commitment to developing talented hockey players.

Udita Duhan's dedication to coaching has been instrumental, and with the support of Hockey Club president Amrik Powar, Mithapur is poised for greater achievements in women's hockey.
