Celebrations in Kaithal as Harvinder Singh Wins Gold
The family of Indian para-archer Harvinder Singh in Kaithal, Haryana, is overjoyed following his remarkable gold medal victory at the 2026 Asian Para Games. His father, Paramjit Singh, expressed immense pride in his son's accomplishment.
Harvinder, along with teammate Vijay Sundi, triumphed in the men's recurve doubles event, defeating their Chinese opponents with a score of 5-1. After a tightly contested first set that ended in a tie at 35-35, the Indian duo secured the next two sets with scores of 37-36 and 38-36, ultimately clinching the gold.
The family home was filled with joy as they celebrated Harvinder's success, distributing sweets to friends and relatives. Paramjit Singh shared his happiness, stating that they had faith in Harvinder's ability to win gold again, emphasizing that his dedication has truly paid off.
In an interview, Paramjit reflected on the flood of congratulatory messages he received throughout the day. He recounted how Harvinder's journey in archery began in 2012 after he was inspired by the London Olympics, leading him to train at Punjabi University in Patiala after consulting a coach.
"It fills one with pride to see your child succeed. Since morning, calls have been coming in. Harvinder started this journey in 2012 at Punjabi University. Watching the London Olympics ignited a desire in him to pursue archery. After speaking with the coach there, he began his training on their archery ground," he shared.
Paramjit also noted that during the COVID-19 pandemic, when all training facilities were closed, Harvinder remained undeterred. With his father's encouragement, he leveled a section of their farmland, set up archery targets, and created a personal practice area to continue his training.
Harvinder's relentless effort has already earned him a gold medal at the 2018 Asian Para Games and the prestigious Arjuna Award from the Indian government in 2021. He made history by securing a bronze medal at the 2023 Asian Para Games in China and a gold medal at the 2024 Paris Paralympics, becoming the first Indian archer to achieve this feat. In recognition of his achievements, he was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2025.
