In Moga, Punjab, Harmandar Singh, the father of Harmanpreet Kaur, captain of the Indian women's cricket team, expressed immense pride following the team's gold medal win at the 2026 Asian Games. He emphasized the importance of families supporting their daughters in sports, highlighting this achievement as a significant moment for the nation.

The Indian women's cricket team secured their second consecutive Asian Games gold by defeating Sri Lanka by 147 runs in the final match held on Tuesday.

Harmandar Singh shared his thoughts on the victory, stating that it reflects the hard work of the players and is a source of national pride. He extended his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann for their congratulations and urged families to encourage their daughters, assuring them that they would bring pride to their families.

He remarked, "It is a matter of great pride for the entire country that the daughters of India are making the nation proud...the entire team is reaping the result of the hard work they put in...my appeal to people is that they should support their daughters, for one day, she will make you proud."

The Indian women's team showcased their dominance at the continental level, achieving their second consecutive gold medal at the Asian Games, thanks to stellar performances from Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma. The bowlers played a crucial role, leading to a significant 147-run victory over Sri Lanka.

After setting a challenging target of 216/3, India bowled Sri Lanka out for just 69 runs in 15.4 overs.

This victory marked India's first gold medal in this edition of the Asian Games. The team reached the finals after defeating Japan by 8 wickets and Bangladesh by 114 runs. Prior to this, they had an impressive run in the Asia Cup, remaining unbeaten and defeating Sri Lanka by 72 runs to claim the title.

In the final match, Smriti Mandhana was the standout performer, scoring 79 runs off 45 balls, while Shafali Verma contributed a quick 48 off 29 balls. Richa Ghosh added a late flourish with an unbeaten 49 off 22 balls. Mandhana's innings included five fours and seven sixes, marking her 37th half-century in T20 internationals and making her the first woman cricketer to surpass 11,000 runs in international cricket.
