India's Captain Reflects on Series Loss

Taunton [UK], June 3: Despite the recent series defeat against England, Indian women's cricket team captain Harmanpreet Kaur expressed optimism about the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026. She noted that the team has identified numerous positives from their performance.

India faced a six-wicket loss in the series finale on Wednesday, resulting in England Women winning the series 2-1. This match was crucial as it was the last before the Women’s World Cup, which kicks off on June 12. India is set to face their long-time rivals, Pakistan, on June 14 in their opening group match.

Following the match, Kaur remarked that India was competitive throughout but struggled to break the pivotal partnership between Alice Capsey and Heather Knight, which ultimately influenced the game's outcome.

Kaur emphasized that the team has gleaned valuable insights for the forthcoming World Cup, while also indicating that they have a clear idea of their preferred playing eleven. However, she mentioned that they remain flexible and open to adjustments based on their upcoming practice matches against West Indies and England.

She stated, "We were close to getting that crucial wicket. We felt we were in the game, but unfortunately, we couldn’t break that partnership. We have taken a lot of positives into the World Cup. We have a good idea of our best XI, but with two more practice games before the tournament, we can explore other combinations. We have talented players waiting for their chance, but we are confident in our XI moving forward."

In the decisive match, England chased down a target of 181 runs, winning the series 2-1. India batted first, scoring 180/5, with Harmanpreet leading the charge with an unbeaten 56, supported by Deepti Sharma (32) and Jemimah Rodrigues (29). England's bowlers, particularly Lauren Bell (2/36 in 4 overs), effectively limited India's scoring opportunities.

England, after a shaky start at 38/3, recovered thanks to a remarkable 137-run partnership between Alice Capsey (82) and Heather Knight (70*), which ultimately secured their victory. They completed the chase in just 18.3 overs, clinching both the match and the series.
