Harmanpreet Kaur Discusses Turning Point in India's Women's World Cup Journey
A Transformative Meeting After Defeat
Harmanpreet Kaur shared insights on how a pivotal meeting following India's loss to England during the 2025 Women's World Cup significantly altered the team's trajectory in the tournament. The 37-year-old captain acknowledged the crucial role of head coach Amol Mazumdar, whose motivational words helped the squad regain their focus after suffering three consecutive defeats in the league stage.
Initially, India faced setbacks against Australia, South Africa, and England, which put them in a precarious position, needing to win against New Zealand to advance. A crucial victory against the White Ferns secured their spot in the semi-finals, where they surprised the defending champions, Australia. They later triumphed over South Africa in the final held at DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.
The loss to England was particularly disheartening, especially after a strong partnership between Harmanpreet and vice-captain Smriti Mandhana. Following the defeat, the team faced considerable criticism. Harmanpreet recounted that during the subsequent meeting, she chose not to speak, allowing Mazumdar to address the players directly. "That day, he spoke to each player, reflecting on our performance and emphasizing that it was not how we should conclude a match. Everyone took his words to heart, and by the time we reached Bombay, the team was more determined about our future games," she explained during her interaction at the Times Now Summit 2026.
She further noted, "That meeting was a turning point for us in the World Cup. It shifted the team's atmosphere and focus, which was essential for our success moving forward." This victory marked a historic achievement for women's cricket in India, as the Women in Blue clinched their first ICC tournament title, with Harmanpreet becoming the first female Indian captain to win a World Cup.
