Hardik Pandya Reflects on His Journey and Aspirations with Mumbai Indians
Hardik Pandya's Cricket Journey
On Sunday, Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya shared insights about his cricketing journey, revealing that he initially started as a 'pure batter.' He attributes his success to relentless effort and a commitment to exceed expectations, which has established him as one of India's most prized cricketers.
Pandya's career trajectory has been remarkable, beginning with his Ranji Trophy debut in 2013 and making his mark in the Indian Premier League in 2015, coinciding with the Mumbai Indians' second title win. He has since played pivotal roles in India's T20 World Cup victories in 2024 and 2026.
Reflecting on his early days, the 32-year-old stated, 'I was just a pure batter throughout my youth... I believed in pushing my limits, running extra laps when asked.' This dedication caught the attention of selectors, leading to his Ranji Trophy debut just a year later.
Renowned for his dual capabilities in limited-overs cricket, Pandya's proficiency with both bat and ball, particularly as a finisher, has made him an essential asset for the team.
He played a crucial part in India's 2024 T20 World Cup win, taking key wickets in the final against South Africa.
Pandya acknowledged the Mumbai Indians' scouting system for recognizing his potential early on and emphasized the importance of hard work and self-betterment.
'During my Ranji games, they saw something special in me, which speaks volumes about MI's scouting prowess,' he remarked.
'I had to learn to take care of my body, which I initially knew nothing about. Regardless of the challenges, I have always believed in hard work. I encourage young players to adopt this mindset,' he added.
The five-time IPL champions are now aiming for a record sixth title, having last won in 2020.
The Mumbai Indians have had a mixed performance in recent seasons, finishing last in 2024 and being eliminated by the Punjab Kings in the playoffs last year.
'Our ultimate goal is to secure a sixth IPL title for our fans. MI has a rich legacy, and the passion of our supporters is what drives us. I want to play the best cricket possible and add more trophies to our cabinet,' he expressed.
When asked about the absence of five stars on their jersey despite their title wins, Pandya humorously replied, 'We aim to win as many titles as we can. Thankfully, we've already secured five, but if we keep winning, there won't be room for more stars.'
He also highlighted his connection with the franchise's fans, stating, 'I play for the love and support I receive every time I step onto the field. It motivates me immensely.'
The Mumbai Indians are set to kick off their season against the Kolkata Knight Riders at home on March 29.
