Harbhajan Singh's Take on Rohit and Kohli's Future

Harbhajan Singh, the former Indian spinner, expressed his disappointment that the destinies of cricketing icons like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are being influenced by individuals with limited achievements. Despite this, he remains optimistic that both players will continue their careers until the 2027 ODI World Cup.

At 38, Rohit and 37, Kohli are currently focused solely on the ODI format, leading to widespread speculation about their ability to last until the World Cup in South Africa, especially given the diminishing ODI schedule globally.

Head coach Gautam Gambhir and selector chairman Ajit Agarkar have not provided clear answers regarding their futures, but both players have hinted at their determination to secure their spots.

Harbhajan, who is part of the commentary team for the ongoing DP World ILT20 Season 4, remarked, "It's perplexing. As a former player, I understand the situation, but it's unfortunate that such discussions are not taking place."

He added, "Seeing Virat Kohli perform at such a high level is uplifting. It's disheartening that those making decisions about their careers have not achieved much themselves."

With over a year until the World Cup, Harbhajan is confident that both Rohit and Kohli will excel and set standards for future players.

Kohli has recently scored consecutive centuries in the ongoing series against South Africa, while a fitter Rohit has recorded two fifties and a 121 not out in his last four innings.

Harbhajan praised their consistent performance, stating, "They have always been prolific run-scorers and exemplary leaders for India. Their success is commendable."

He emphasized their role in inspiring younger players, saying, "Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are setting the right example for the next generation of cricketers."

Concerns Over India's Home Test Performance

India's recent struggles in home Tests have raised eyebrows among cricket enthusiasts.

Under Gambhir's leadership, India has faced five losses in their last seven home Tests, including a recent 0-2 series defeat against South Africa, marking their first home series loss to the Proteas in 25 years.

Harbhajan pointed out that the quality of home pitches is a significant concern.

"We need to start playing on better tracks. Our batsmen often struggle to score runs at home. In overseas conditions, they have better opportunities to perform due to favorable pitches," he explained.

"The pitches prepared in the last decade have favored bowlers, particularly spinners. It's time to change this trend," he added.

"Our team is strong enough to compete effectively, even in five-day matches. Why settle for two and a half days of Test cricket?" he questioned.

Reflecting on the Guwahati Test, which lasted the full five days, he noted, "The pitch was excellent, but we didn't perform well because we aren't accustomed to playing five-day Tests."

Harbhajan also mentioned that modern players often lack the patience required for Test cricket, a situation exacerbated by the prevalence of T20 formats.

"Aside from a few, many players lack the necessary patience. If we continue to play on such pitches, it won't be engaging for anyone," he stated.

He concluded by saying that India cannot develop a strike spinner on poorly prepared pitches, advocating for better playing conditions.

"We have gained valuable experience over the years. It's time we prioritize quality pitches in India," he asserted.

On the topic of ILT20, Harbhajan commended the league and the UAE Cricket Board for their efforts in promoting cricket in the region.

"This year is particularly noteworthy as players from Saudi Arabia and Kuwait are participating. The UAE Cricket Board has done an excellent job in this regard," he remarked.

"This provides a fantastic opportunity for players to compete alongside established stars," he concluded.
