Southampton [UK], September 2: Hampshire Cricket has announced that New Zealand all-rounder Scott Kuggeleijn will not play for the club after his recent signing for the last four County Championship matches sparked considerable backlash from fans.
The club revealed Kuggeleijn's signing as an overseas player on Tuesday, but following a wave of criticism on social media and input from supporters and staff, they retracted the decision just before the toss for their match against Warwickshire on Wednesday.
In a statement, Hampshire Cricket said, “After reflecting and considering feedback from our staff and supporters, we can confirm that Scott Kuggeleijn will not represent the club. We appreciate the passion of our fanbase and thank everyone who shared their opinions.”
The statement further emphasized, “Our focus now shifts to supporting the team during the final four County Championship fixtures of the season. We urge everyone to rally behind the team as we approach a critical phase of the campaign.”
Kuggeleijn, aged 34, faced accusations of rape and indecent assault in 2015, but he was acquitted in 2017 after a trial ended in a hung jury, according to reports. He has played for New Zealand 23 times across various formats, and his past selections have also faced protests from certain fans.
Details from the 2015 incident have previously come under scrutiny, including a text message Kuggeleijn sent to the complainant, in which he apologized for being “pretty persistent.” During the trial, he mentioned that the complainant “might have said, ‘no, no’ a few times” on the night in question.
Hampshire's decision to sign Kuggeleijn was initially posted on the club's website but was not promoted through social media or a press release. His inclusion in the squad against Warwickshire led to significant criticism.
The club has not clarified whether Kuggeleijn's contract has been terminated or if he remains under contract but will not be selected for matches.
This development comes at a challenging time for Hampshire in the County Championship, as they currently sit at the bottom of Division One with four matches left, facing the threat of relegation.
Kuggeleijn was brought in to bolster Hampshire's squad for the concluding part of the Championship season, but the team will now proceed without the New Zealand international.
