John Turner's Unexpected Retirement from Cricket

London [UK], August 6: John Turner, a fast bowler for Hampshire and former England international, has made the surprising announcement of his retirement from professional cricket at just 25 years old.

Born in Johannesburg, Turner had two years left on his contract with Hampshire and was under an ECB development deal until late last year. He played two One Day Internationals and two T20 Internationals during England's tour of the West Indies in late 2024, where he took three wickets.

Despite a promising domestic career, Turner has decided to end his professional journey unexpectedly.

In a statement, Turner expressed, "Playing professional and international cricket has been a dream come true for me, especially representing Hampshire and England. However, I have chosen to retire, which has been an incredibly tough decision. The stress fracture that has kept me off the field for over a year, along with my injury history, led me to reconsider my future both in cricket and beyond. I believe now is the right moment to explore new challenges. My five years with Hampshire have been the most rewarding of my life. From the moment I joined, the club welcomed me with open arms, and that support never wavered," he shared.

Turner acknowledged the club's faith in him, stating, "I am immensely grateful for the opportunities I received. The experiences I've had over the years are beyond what I could have imagined, and none of it would have been possible without the backing of everyone at the club."

Educated at Hilton College, one of South Africa's top schools, Turner moved to the UK for university, benefiting from his British passport through his English mother.

He joined Hampshire in 2021 after a successful trial and received his first England call-up in 2023 following a standout performance in The Hundred. However, he faced limited chances in Hampshire's County Championship team, making only seven first-class appearances. He also played three matches on loan at Lancashire in early 2025 before injuries hindered his progress again.
