Gurvinder Singh's Inspiring Journey

Just a day after clinching a bronze medal at the Asian Games, Gurvinder Singh, India's fastest sprinter, shared his challenging journey, highlighting the tough times he faced while training in worn-out spike shoes. Speaking to the media in Jalandhar, the 25-year-old athlete from Patial village expressed his gratitude towards his family, coaches, and supporters who played a pivotal role in his success.

Earlier this year, Gurvinder made headlines by clocking an impressive 10.09 seconds in the 100m at the Federation Cup in Ranchi, becoming the first Indian to break the 10.10-second barrier.

Reflecting on his early challenges, he mentioned that many doubted the potential of Indian athletes in the 100m sprint, with some even suggesting he switch events. Despite this, Gurvinder remained determined to prove them wrong.

He emphasized that his coaches never discouraged him, which fueled his resolve to excel in sprinting. Gurvinder also shared the financial hardships he endured, revealing that he trained in the same pair of spike shoes for two to three years, showcasing them during a media event.

"My financial situation was challenging at that time. However, after sharing my story on social media, I received tremendous support from people worldwide," he noted.

Gurvinder also recounted his memorable meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which followed the mention of his national record on 'Mann Ki Baat.' He described the experience as nerve-wracking yet incredibly rewarding.

Looking forward, Gurvinder aims to enhance his performance at the upcoming Asian and World Championships, aspiring to convert his bronze medal into gold.

He reminisced about witnessing fellow sprinter Animesh win gold at last year's National Games and receiving recognition from senior state officials. Gurvinder hopes his recent achievement will similarly elevate his status in his home state.

His coach, Sarabjeet Singh Happy, remarked that Gurvinder's accomplishments have inspired a new generation of athletes, instilling confidence in young talents training at Jalandhar to aspire for medals in athletics for India.
