A Crucial Test for the Blue Tigers

In Bengaluru, India’s goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu has labeled the forthcoming international friendlies against Panama, Brazil, and Uruguay as a "fantastic opportunity" for the team to measure themselves against top-tier competition. He emphasized the importance of treating these matches as regular games rather than getting overwhelmed by the significance of the events.

The Blue Tigers are set to clash with Panama on September 26 at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru. Following this, they will face Brazil, the five-time world champions, on October 3, and Uruguay, the two-time champions, on October 6, both matches taking place in Kolkata.

Gurpreet expressed that these encounters will provide valuable insights into the team's standing on the international stage. He stated, "This is a great chance for us to test our mettle against World Cup-level teams, and it’s beneficial for everyone to understand where we stand as a nation and a team."

The 34-year-old goalkeeper reflected on the surreal experience of facing teams he has admired during World Cups, urging his teammates to seize the moment and deliver a strong performance at home. "It’s somewhat surreal to think about facing teams I’ve watched in the World Cup. But anything can happen in football, so let’s make the most of this opportunity and put up a tough fight at home," he remarked.

When asked about preparing for world-class attackers from Brazil and Uruguay, Gurpreet mentioned that his preparation routine remains consistent, focusing on fitness, mental sharpness, and rigorous training. He noted, "There’s nothing particularly different I do; it’s about staying fit and mentally fresh. Being 34 makes it a bit challenging, but it’s crucial to keep a clear mind and stay physically ready."

He also pointed out the significance of training with high-caliber players at Bengaluru FC, stating that the competitive environment in training helps him gear up for the intensity of international matches. "Training against quality players pushes you to your limits, which translates into game performance. It’s essential to recreate that competitive spirit in training," he added.

Despite Brazil and Uruguay's illustrious footballing legacies, Gurpreet stressed the need for India to approach these matches without being daunted by the occasion. He said, "We are all fans of these teams and their legendary players. However, as a player, I’m focused on treating it as just another game."

He insisted that the team must prepare to compete against the players on the field rather than being intimidated by their opponents' reputations. "We need to approach these matches with the mindset of competing against 11 players, not just the names on their jerseys. It’s vital to prepare tactically, mentally, and physically, focusing on our objectives rather than the occasion itself," he concluded.

In preparation for the September-October FIFA International Match Window, the Blue Tigers have announced a 26-player squad, which includes goalkeepers Albino Gomes, Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, Prabhsukhan Singh Gill, and Som Kumar, along with defenders, midfielders, and forwards.

The squad also features reserves, including goalkeeper Hrithik Tiwari, defenders Chinglensana Singh Konsham and Roshan Singh Naorem, and midfielder Suresh Singh Wangjam, who may be called up if necessary.
