Brar's Impact on the Upcoming Test Series
Colombo [Sri Lanka], August 11: Former Sri Lankan all-rounder Farveez Maharoof has highlighted that pacer Gurnoor Brar could serve as the 'X-Factor' for the Indian team during their two-Test series against Sri Lanka, commencing on August 15 in Galle.
Brar, who made his ODI debut against Afghanistan earlier this year, has claimed 11 wickets in six innings with an average of 32.81. His first-class cricket statistics are impressive, boasting 62 wickets in 19 matches at an average of 25.24, including four four-wicket hauls, two five-wicket hauls, and one ten-wicket match. His height and ability to generate pace and bounce have positioned him as one of the promising fast bowlers of the new generation.
During a media interaction organized by Sony Sports Network, Maharoof, who is part of the expert panel for the series, expressed his admiration for Brar, stating, “I believe Gurnoor Brar can be an X-Factor. He possesses bounce, pace, and a competitive spirit, making him a formidable player.”
He further noted, “In the warm-up match against SL XI, where he took three wickets, Brar's deliveries troubled experienced batters, causing some discomfort. If I were part of India's decision-making team, I would be inclined to include Brar. Although he has limited experience in red-ball cricket, his ability to disrupt a batter's rhythm makes him a valuable asset.”
Maharoof also praised Indian captain Shubman Gill, calling him a “quality player” and expressing eagerness to see him perform. “Shubman Gill is exceptional; his Test average this year is around 70. His performance in the second innings of the warm-up match was outstanding. He is among the best across all formats,” he concluded.
Currently, Gill has amassed 950 runs in 14 innings at an impressive average of 79.16 during the ongoing WTC 2025-27 cycle, including five centuries and a fifty, with a top score of 269. He ranks as the third-highest run-scorer in the cycle and is India's leading run-getter.
In ODIs this year, Gill has been in phenomenal form, scoring 561 runs in eight innings at an average of 93.50 and a strike rate of 110.65, featuring one century and five fifties.
This Test series is part of the ongoing ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle. Under Gill's leadership, India currently sits fifth in the standings, with four wins and four losses from nine matches, achieving a Points Percentage (PCT) of 48.150. Sri Lanka is positioned sixth, with one win, one draw, and two losses.
