Gurnoor Brar's Rapid Ascent in Cricket

Gurnoor Brar, a promising pacer from Muktsar, is making headlines in the cricketing world.

Recently, the 25-year-old received his first call-up to the Indian Test and ODI teams, and he made his ODI debut on Saturday, marking a significant achievement in his burgeoning career.

This towering 6-foot-5 bowler plays for Punjab in domestic cricket and represents the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He is recognized for his ability to deliver effective hit-the-deck bowling and is considered one of the fast bowlers being prepared for the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa.

The conditions in Dharamsala, known for their seam-friendly nature and moist air, provided Brar with the perfect opportunity to kick off his international journey.

He quickly made his presence felt on the field.

In his debut over, Afghanistan's opener Ibrahim Zadran misplayed a well-placed delivery outside off stump, resulting in a catch for skipper Shubman Gill at mid-off.

Brar is noted for his high-arm bowling style and his ability to generate significant bounce, reaching speeds of up to 145 km/h, showcasing both his pace and self-assurance.

India's bowling coach, Morne Morkel, a former hit-the-deck fast bowler himself, praised the new generation of pacers after observing their performance during the national training camp.

“My initial thoughts were that they seemed like they had been part of the team for years. There was no sign of nervousness. While I can imagine they might feel anxious joining the squad, their training energy and skills have been impressive,” Morkel remarked during a pre-match press briefing on Friday.

Brar has taken 52 wickets across 18 First-Class matches and has also participated in nine List A games and various domestic T20 matches for Punjab.

He had an outstanding 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season, emerging as Punjab’s top wicket-taker. His performance during India A’s tour of Australia, where he secured six wickets against Australia A, also caught the selectors' eye.
