Gurnoor Brar: From Basketball Aspirations to Indian Cricket Star
Gurnoor Brar's Cricket Journey
Gurnoor Brar's father envisioned a future for him in basketball, but Gurnoor's passion for cricket ultimately prevailed. Now, this talented pacer from Muktsar has received an invitation to represent India in the upcoming One-Day International (ODI) and Test series against Afghanistan.
His father, ASI Sukhvir Singh Brar, was a national-level basketball player. Despite initial resistance from his family, Gurnoor dedicated countless hours to honing his cricket skills. His mother, Manwinder Kaur Brar, noted, "He never let the weather or fatigue deter him from his practice."
Hailing from Kheowali village, Gurnoor has emerged as a notable cricket talent from the Malwa region, joining the ranks of celebrated players like Shubman Gill from Fazilka and Harmanpreet Kaur from Moga.
At 6 feet 5 inches tall, the 26-year-old fast bowler can reach speeds exceeding 145 kmph. Currently, he is engaged with the Gujarat Titans in the IPL, having previously played for the Punjab Kings.
His mother shared that Gurnoor was resolute about pursuing cricket from his Class X days. Despite facing injuries and challenges, he remained committed to his dream. "He looks up to former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh and often studies videos of Dale Steyn, the legendary South African fast bowler," she added.
Family members expressed immense pride in Gurnoor's selection for the national team, celebrating in both Mohali, where they currently reside, and Kheowali, where his grandparents live. His younger brother, Varnoor Brar, is also a cricketer in Mohali.
Gurnoor completed his schooling at Ryan International School in Chandigarh and graduated with a BA from DAV College, Sector 10, last year.
He was one of the top wicket-takers for Punjab in the Ranji Trophy and had a remarkable performance in the Sher-e-Punjab League held in Mohali.
Relatives highlighted Gurnoor's humility despite his rising fame. His maternal uncle, Sarabjit Singh Dhaliwal from Bhagsar village, remarked, "His success is a source of immense pride for us and for Punjab."
Cousin Savneetinder Singh Dhaliwal expressed happiness over Gurnoor achieving his lifelong dream of joining Team India. An old friend, Sherbaz Singh Fattanwala, fondly recalled, "It feels like just yesterday when Gurnoor would come to Muktsar for tournaments."
