Gulveer Singh Makes History with Silver Medal in Men's 10,000m at Commonwealth Games
Historic Achievement for Indian Athletics
Glasgow [Scotland], July 29: Indian long-distance runner Gulveer Singh has made history by becoming the first athlete from India to win a medal in the men's 10,000m event at the Commonwealth Games. Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya praised Gulveer for his remarkable achievement, highlighting his status as a core athlete under the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS).
In a message shared on X, Mandaviya expressed his congratulations, stating, “Pacing to the podium! Congratulations to TOPS Core athlete Gulveer Singh on winning the Silver Medal in the Men’s 10,000m race at the Commonwealth Games 2026.”
Gulveer delivered an outstanding performance, finishing the race with a time of 27:49.78, thus securing the silver medal. He maintained his position among the leaders throughout the race and executed a strong sprint in the final lap, finishing just behind Australia’s Ky Robinson, who took gold. David Mullarkey from the Isle of Man earned the bronze medal, while traditional distance-running nations like Kenya and Uganda did not medal.
This achievement marks a significant milestone in Gulveer's burgeoning career in international athletics. He has already made a name for himself by clinching gold medals in both the 5,000m and 10,000m events at the 2025 Asian Championships.
Additionally, Gulveer holds several national records, including the men’s 10,000m record of 27:00.20, and he became the first Indian to complete a mile in under four minutes with a time of 3:55.63.
His silver medal contributed to India's growing medal tally at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, which now stands at 12 medals—two gold, seven silver, and three bronze. On the same day, weightlifter Harjinder Kaur also secured a silver in the women’s 69kg category with a personal best lift of 227kg.
India's medal winners so far include Mirabai Chanu (gold, weightlifting), Sharmila Dhankar (gold, women’s shot put F57), Rishikanta Singh (silver, weightlifting), Muthupandi Raja (silver, weightlifting), Gyaneshwari Yadav (silver, weightlifting), Sarvesh Kushare (silver, men’s high jump), Gulveer Singh (silver, men’s 10,000m), Harjinder Kaur (silver, weightlifting), Valluri Ajaya Babu (silver, weightlifting), Bindyarani Devi (bronze, weightlifting), Shilpa K.
