Gujarat Titans' Openers Achieve Milestone in IPL History
Historic Partnership for Gujarat Titans
Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan, the opening batsmen for the Gujarat Titans (GT), have made a significant mark in the Indian Premier League (IPL) by surpassing 2,500 runs in partnerships. They now stand alongside the iconic pair of Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers (3,123 runs) and Kohli with Chris Gayle (2,787 runs) from Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) as the only all-Indian and third overall pair in IPL history to reach this achievement. This milestone was accomplished at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur during their match against the Rajasthan Royals.
Gill and Sudharsan Make Their Mark
The duo has set a record as the fastest in IPL history to reach the 2,500-run milestone, achieving this in just 43 innings. The only pair to do it quicker are English domestic players Daniel Bell-Drummond and Joe Denly, who managed it in 41 innings. Currently, Gill and Sudharsan boast the highest average of any partnership exceeding 2,500 runs, standing at 62.56. They are tied with Kohli-Gayle, Kohli-de Villiers, and Babar Azam-Mohammad Rizwan for the most 100-plus partnerships, with their ninth century stand coming against RR. Since 2022, they have been a formidable partnership and are on the path to becoming the most successful T20 duo globally.
In their recent match against RR, the pair contributed significantly, with Gill scoring 50 runs off 30 balls and Sudharsan adding 55 runs off 36 balls. Their consistent performance, along with Jos Buttler batting at number three, has made them a crucial part of the team's strategy, although their reliance on the top three has raised some concerns.
Record-Equalling Performance
With yet another century partnership, the opening pair of Gujarat Titans once again dominated the Rajasthan Royals bowlers, establishing a solid foundation for their innings. They reached their 100-run partnership in just 8.1 overs, showcasing their dominance over the RR bowling lineup. This latest achievement ties them for the most century partnerships for the opening wicket in IPL history, now totaling six 100-plus stands, equaling the records set by renowned opening pairs like David Warner and Shikhar Dhawan from Sunrisers Hyderabad, as well as Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head. Other notable combinations include Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli, who have five century partnerships for RCB, and Warner with Jonny Bairstow, also with five for SRH.
