Gujarat Titans Face Setback in IPL 2026 Opener Against Punjab Kings
Gujarat Titans' IPL 2026 Campaign Begins with a Loss
The Gujarat Titans, under the leadership of Shubman Gill, commenced their IPL 2026 journey with a disappointing defeat to the Punjab Kings on March 31. The Titans, who were champions in 2022, were unable to defend a target of 163 runs against the home side. Gill's captaincy faced scrutiny, particularly for delaying the introduction of Prasidh Krishna until the 13th over. Prasidh, who had previously secured the Purple Cap in IPL 2025, made an immediate impact by dismissing PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer for 18 runs off 11 balls with his very first delivery.
In his second over, Prasidh took down both Shashank Singh and Marcus Stoinis, putting the Punjab team in a challenging position. However, he conceded 9 runs in his third over and 14 runs in his final over. Cricket legend Anil Kumble expressed his surprise at Gill's decision-making, stating, "It was quite unexpected for GT to hold back Prasidh Krishna, the Purple Cap holder, until the 13th over." Kumble noted that Iyer's dismissal was somewhat fortunate, as he had been struggling with concentration after being hit on the hand earlier.
While Kumble raised questions about Gill's tactics, Iyer commended the GT captain for his strategic choices, particularly his decision to position a short leg fielder. Iyer remarked, "I was genuinely surprised. I told Shubman that was something I had never experienced before. It's refreshing to see captains take an aggressive approach." Gill, who was unexpectedly omitted from the 2026 T20 World Cup squad, managed to score 39 runs off 27 balls, achieving a strike rate of 144.44 with six boundaries. Unfortunately, none of the other Titans' batsmen could maintain a strike rate above 150, and they fell short of reaching the 170-run mark.
On a brighter note, Cooper Connolly made a remarkable debut in the IPL, scoring an impressive 72 runs off 44 balls. With a strike rate of 163.64, Connolly hit five sixes and an equal number of fours during his innings.
