In a pivotal moment during the match, head coach Javier Aguirre substituted Ochoa for starter Raul Rangel in the 77th minute, marking a memorable occasion as he took the field at Estadio Azteca, likely for the last time.
At 40 years and 346 days, Ochoa became the oldest player to represent Mexico in a FIFA World Cup match, breaking the previous record held by Rafa Marquez, who played at 39 years and 139 days in 2018.
Ochoa has participated in six World Cup tournaments: 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022, and now 2026. Although he did not play in the 2006 and 2010 editions, he later emerged as a crucial player, solidifying his status as one of Mexico's most prominent figures on the world stage.
In the match itself, Mexico concluded a successful group-stage campaign with a 3-0 victory over the Czech Republic, achieving three wins in three matches and topping Group A. Already through to the Round of 32, the team displayed confidence, especially in the second half after a scoreless first half.
Mateo Chavez opened the scoring shortly after halftime with a well-placed shot past the Czech defense, followed by Julian Quinones extending the lead from close range. Ochoa's late-game introduction marked another highlight in his illustrious World Cup journey.
Alvaro Fidalgo sealed the match in stoppage time, ensuring a 3-0 victory and maintaining Mexico's perfect record in the group stage. This result confirmed their top position and set the stage for the knockout rounds, while the Czech Republic was eliminated due to insufficient points.
