Graeme Smith Reflects on Proteas' Success

In Durban, former South African captain Graeme Smith, who now serves as the commissioner for the SA20 league, expressed immense pride in the Proteas Test team's achievements over the past year. He highlighted their historic victory in the ICC World Test Championship and their first Test series win in India in 25 years. Smith is hopeful that the Proteas can achieve consecutive victories in senior men's cricket by clinching the T20 World Cup title, particularly against India on their home turf.

During a media interaction in Durban, coinciding with the fourth season of the SA20 league, Smith, a cricket legend with over 17,000 runs to his name, praised the leadership of captain Temba Bavuma and coach Shukri Conrad. He referred to the Test team as a "beacon of light" and expressed his desire for the Proteas to avenge their narrow defeat to India in the 2024 T20 World Cup finals in Barbados.

Smith stated, "I would love for us to beat India in the final. Touring India is always challenging, but I was pleasantly surprised by our dominance in the Test series. The Test side has truly been a beacon of light for our national team. Temba and Shukri have done remarkable work, and I hope this continues."

He also mentioned that in the white-ball format, Shukri's team, led by Aiden Markram, has the potential to excel in the T20 World Cup if they can find the right combinations. Smith believes the team possesses the necessary firepower, bowling skills, and the ability to handle spin, especially in India.

"There's a wealth of talent in the white-ball format. If Shukri and the team can align their combinations effectively, I see a real opportunity for success, given their power and bowling capabilities. Additionally, the middle order has the quality to tackle spin, particularly in India. Let's hope for a successful World Cup ahead," he added.

Smith cautioned against underestimating India, noting their talent, especially during a home World Cup, and predicted they would at least reach the semifinals. He remarked on the interesting transition phase in Indian cricket, observing the dynamics between head coach Gautam Gambhir and senior players.

"It’s fascinating to see how this transition unfolds. I would be surprised if India doesn't make it to the last four," he stated.

The former captain emphasized that the SA20 league serves as an excellent platform for players to gear up for the T20 World Cup, offering competitive matches against top players in front of enthusiastic crowds, which are broadcasted globally.

"Entering a World Cup, it's crucial to have played competitive cricket. Many international players have remarked on the high level of competition here, making it a great preparation ground for our players. However, the key will be determining the right combinations for the tournament in India," he concluded.

In the upcoming T20 World Cup, South Africa finds itself in a challenging group alongside New Zealand, Afghanistan, Canada, and the UAE. They will kick off their campaign against Canada at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on February 9.
