Panaji (Goa) [India], July 31: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has officially launched the Goa Chess Academy, a significant initiative aimed at establishing Goa as a national chess hub. This project is a collaboration between the Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs, the Sports Authority of Goa, and the Goa Chess Association.

In a further effort to enhance the sports infrastructure in Goa, the Chief Minister also introduced the official Goa Chess Jersey. This move aligns with the Government's goal of promoting chess throughout the State, as detailed in a press release.

During the event, Grandmaster Ethan Vaz was honored with a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh for his achievements. Additionally, the Goa Chess Association received Rs 20 lakh in government funding to support the esteemed Manohar Parrikar Chess Tournament, bringing the total financial backing announced to Rs 25 lakh.

According to the Chief Minister, the Goa Chess Academy aims to cultivate a strong pipeline of elite coaches and players. Plans are underway to set up training centers in every taluka and to establish a specialized academy in South Goa.

Emphasizing the long-term vision for Goa, Sawant noted that these initiatives will help place the State on the international chess map, with aspirations to host and participate in major events like the FIDE World Cup. Furthermore, these efforts will contribute to the Fit India Movement by promoting both physical fitness and mental prowess through chess.
