Ghana's Resilient Defense Earns Draw Against England in FIFA World Cup 2026
Ghana Holds England to a Goalless Stalemate
Massachusetts [US], June 24: Ghana's head coach Carlos Queiroz expressed his pride in the team's tenacity after they managed to secure a goalless draw against England in their Group L match at Boston Stadium on Tuesday (local time).
Following their impressive 4-2 victory over Croatia, England was anticipated to maintain their attacking prowess. However, they encountered a determined Ghana squad that effectively neutralized their efforts, resulting in a shared point. This draw places Ghana on the verge of advancing to the knockout stage of the World Cup.
Post-match, Queiroz praised his players for their fighting spirit and adherence to the game strategy throughout the encounter.
“I am incredibly proud of how our players battled during the match and how they adhered to the game plan,” Queiroz remarked.
“When it’s time to defend, we defend. I can’t play samba while they play rock and roll. That’s the essence of the game, and our goal was to frustrate the England team in the first half, leaving them without solutions.”
Queiroz emphasized that his players had confidence in their ability to compete against England, whom he regards as a formidable contender for the World Cup title. He noted that the draw was a significant accomplishment for Ghana.
“My players always believed we had a chance to win against such a strong team. In my humble opinion, England is a potential World Cup winner. But this result is an achievement,” he added.
During the match, England controlled possession but found it challenging to penetrate a well-organized and disciplined Ghana defense. Ghana maintained a solid five-man backline, limiting England's opportunities to long-range attempts, resulting in no shots on target in the first half.
Queiroz mentioned that Ghana gained confidence after halftime, noting that England struggled to find ways to break through their defense. He remarked that both teams had scoring opportunities, making the 0-0 draw a just outcome.
“When they (England) went into halftime, they realized they lacked solutions to overcome us, and that’s when we began to assert control over the game. We had chances to score, and while we didn’t capitalize, England also had opportunities. Thus, a draw is a fair result,” he stated.
In the second half, England brought on Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford, and Eberechi Eze to enhance their attacking options, which increased their urgency. Nevertheless, Ghana continued to defend resolutely, thwarting key chances.
England's best opportunity came late in the match when Nico O'Reilly struck the crossbar, and Kane failed to convert the rebound. Another late attempt was cleared off the line during stoppage time. Despite relentless pressure, England could not find the net, allowing Ghana to secure a valuable point through their strong defensive performance.
