Gautam Gambhir's Coaching Staff Absent for T20I Series Against Zimbabwe

Coaching Changes Ahead of T20I Series

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced that head coach Gautam Gambhir and his team will not be present for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe. VVS Laxman is set to step in as the coach, marking his return to the national team for the first time since Gambhir's appointment. Laxman has previously taken charge during Rahul Dravid's tenure and will now lead the team in Zimbabwe.

Gambhir has been with the Indian team for nearly two years, making this his first absence from a series since he joined the coaching staff in July 2024. Laxman, who has worked with various captains in the past, will collaborate with Shreyas Iyer for the first time in this series. Iyer has taken over the T20I captaincy from Suryakumar Yadav, who was removed from the role and dropped from the squad.

India faced challenges in their recent outings, suffering defeats in both matches against Ireland, resulting in a series whitewash. Their struggles continued in England, where they lost the five-match T20I series 0-4, with the first match being abandoned due to rain. Laxman faces the daunting task of breaking India's six-match losing streak, as the two-time T20 World Cup champions have not secured a victory since the ICC event.

VVS Laxman's Coaching Aspirations

Despite being a strong candidate to become India's head coach in 2024, Laxman opted to remain at the BCCI Centre of Excellence, where he has been serving since 2021. His desire to lead the national team was evident in 2021, but the BCCI chose Rahul Dravid for the role, as Dravid was already the chief of the COE. Dravid held the coaching position from November 2021 until June 2024 and is currently not affiliated with any IPL team.
