Gautam Gambhir Updates on Rishabh Pant's Injury Ahead of New Zealand Test Series
Gambhir Comments on Pant's Fitness
Hamilton [New Zealand], November 1: India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, stated on Sunday that he currently lacks information regarding the fitness of wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant for the upcoming two-match Test series against New Zealand.
Pant suffered an injury while leading India in the Irani Cup, reportedly feeling discomfort while executing a sweep shot during the first innings. Despite this setback, he returned to bat at No. 8 in the second innings but was also battling flu symptoms and did not keep wickets during Jammu and Kashmir's chase.
He is now recuperating under the care of the BCCI medical team. Although he has resumed skill training, the management is cautious about his fitness. The timeline for his return to play will become clearer after he completes three to four skill sessions, with his performance in these sessions determining when he can return to competitive cricket.
Gambhir Reflects on T20I Series Win
During the post-match press conference following India’s 3-2 T20I series victory, Gambhir was asked about Pant’s condition and remarked, "At this moment, I have no updates, but we will share information as soon as it becomes available."
He also reflected on the challenges faced during the T20I series against New Zealand, noting that the players had limited preparation time before the matches.
Gambhir mentioned that approximately 70 to 80 percent of the squad were visiting New Zealand for the first time, emphasizing the difficulties they encountered.
"This tour was particularly tough for the T20 team. Unlike the Test and ODI players, these boys had no time to prepare. Most of them were new to New Zealand," he stated.
Challenges of Travel and Weather
Highlighting the extreme travel and weather conditions, Gambhir praised the players for their strong performance despite having only one practice session after a 15-hour flight.
"The weather here is vastly different from where we came from. Achieving such a performance against a quality team after just one practice session is commendable. Many may overlook this, but it’s a significant achievement, especially under pressure without adequate preparation," he added.
Looking Ahead to the ODI Series
As the team prepares for the upcoming ODI series, Gambhir acknowledged that India would be fielding a relatively inexperienced bowling lineup, particularly in the fast-bowling department. The three-match ODI series is set to commence on November 4.
He pointed out that Auqib Nabi and Anshul Kamboj have each played only one ODI, while Gurnoor has participated in around 10 to 12 matches. Arshdeep Singh stands out as the only fast bowler with significant experience.
"Winning every series is crucial, not just in New Zealand. This could be one of our most inexperienced ODI bowling attacks: Auqib Nabi has 1 match, Anshul Kamboj has 1 match, Gurnoor has 10-12 matches, and only Arshdeep has substantial experience among fast bowlers," Gambhir explained.
Importance of Bowling in ODIs
He emphasized the pivotal role the bowling unit will play in determining India’s success in the upcoming overseas ODI series, noting that bowlers are often key to winning matches and series away from home.
"While we have plenty of batting experience, it’s the bowlers who can secure victories in ODIs and Tests when playing abroad. If we succeed, the credit should go to the bowlers, not just the batters," he stated.
Fifth T20I Recap
In the fifth T20I, New Zealand triumphed over India by seven wickets at Seddon Park, Hamilton, successfully chasing down a target of 192 runs in 17.4 overs for a consolation victory, while India secured the five-match series 3-2.
Tim Seifert led the charge for New Zealand with a stunning 93 runs off 50 balls, including 11 fours and five sixes, while Glenn Phillips contributed an unbeaten 65 off 38 deliveries. The pair added 86 runs for the third wicket, putting New Zealand in a strong position. Phillips also marked his fourth half-century of the series, joining the ranks of Mohammad Rizwan and S Ravichandran as players with four or more 50-plus scores in a bilateral T20I series.
Earlier, India bounced back from an early setback at 19/2, thanks to a dynamic 93-run partnership between Ishan Kishan and captain Shreyas Iyer. Kishan scored 61 off 31 balls, while Iyer added 50 off 23 deliveries.
Naman Dhir chipped in with 33 off 23 balls, and Nitish Kumar Reddy contributed 22 off 17 balls, leading India to a total of 191/8 in their 20 overs. New Zealand's Adam Milne was the standout bowler, claiming four wickets for 19 runs, while Blair Tickner and Nathan Smith also took wickets. Despite the loss in the final match, India clinched the series 3-2.
