Gautam Gambhir Praises Nitish Kumar Reddy's Growth as India Completes T20I Sweep Against Afghanistan

In a remarkable display of skill, India secured a 3-0 T20I series victory over Afghanistan, culminating in a decisive 127-run win in the final match held in New Delhi. Head coach Gautam Gambhir expressed his support for Nitish Kumar Reddy's evolution as a seam-bowling all-rounder, emphasizing the need for Hardik Pandya to gain match experience before rejoining the international squad.

The third T20I saw Abhishek Sharma achieve a stunning 108 runs off just 34 deliveries, propelling India to a total of 221/7. In response, Afghanistan was bowled out for a mere 94 runs, marking their most significant defeat in T20Is and their lowest score against India in this format.

During the post-match press conference, Gambhir highlighted that Reddy's absence from the T20 format would allow him to gain valuable playing time against the West Indies. He underscored the importance of nurturing seam-bowling all-rounders in preparation for the 2027 ODI World Cup and the upcoming tour of South Africa.

Originally part of the 15-member squad for the Asian Games cricket team, Reddy has been withdrawn to participate in the ODI series against the West Indies instead. Gambhir noted, "From Nitish's perspective, being withdrawn from the T20 format is beneficial, as it allows him to gain experience against the West Indies. We recognize the significance of having seam-bowling all-rounders in the near future, especially with the South Africa tour approaching. Once Hardik returns, it will be advantageous for the team."

Gambhir also mentioned the possibility of fielding both Nitish and Hardik in the same playing eleven, although he cautioned that Pandya is currently unable to bowl a full quota of 10 overs and has not participated in sufficient matches since the IPL.

He stated, "While we could potentially include both in the lineup, Hardik is not yet ready to bowl 10 overs, and we want to avoid rushing him back into international cricket, which can be physically demanding. If he participates in the India A series, it will provide him with the necessary game time."

The coach conveyed a clear message to Hardik: participating in the India A series could facilitate his return to the T20 and ODI teams. Gambhir remarked, "The message is straightforward: if he plays in the India A series and everything goes well, he can rejoin the T20 and ODI squads, while Nitish will also benefit from increased playing time, as he too has not played enough since the IPL."

Gambhir praised Nitish's bowling development, asserting that having multiple seam-bowling all-rounders would be advantageous for the team. He stated, "It's beneficial that we have Nitish available now, as the more he bowls, the better he becomes. Developing a few seam-bowling all-rounders will always be useful for the team."

Regarding Abhishek Sharma's record-setting century, Gambhir emphasized the team's focus on impact rather than individual achievements. He said, "While I could discuss his century, the emphasis is on the impact we create with both bat and ball. This has been our philosophy for the past two years."

Abhishek's explosive performance helped India secure a 127-run victory and complete the series sweep. Gambhir noted the team's achievement of scoring 100 runs in the powerplay for the first time during his coaching tenure as a significant positive.

He concluded, "T20 cricket is not solely about runs or wickets; it's about the impact we can generate. For both Sanju and Abhishek, while one scored a fifty and the other a hundred, the most notable aspect was achieving 100 runs in the powerplay, something we had never accomplished before in my coaching career."

Gambhir reiterated the team's commitment to an aggressive approach, aiming for even higher targets in future matches. He stated, "The message is clear: if you're going hard, keep pushing. We haven't yet reached the 300-run mark, which should be our next target, given the talent we possess. There's still much to achieve."
