Gautam Gambhir Eager for Cricket's Olympic Comeback in 2028
Gautam Gambhir's Vision for Olympic Cricket
In Kolkata, West Bengal, Gautam Gambhir, the head coach of the Indian men's cricket team, expressed his enthusiasm about cricket's return to the Olympic Games, particularly at the upcoming LA 2028 event, as stated in a recent announcement.
Gambhir described the opportunity to represent India at the Olympics as a "significant honor," emphasizing the rarity of such an experience.
During the second day of the RevSportz Trailblazers 4.0 event, he remarked, "I would be thrilled to participate in the Olympics. It’s a tremendous privilege to represent India on such a grand stage."
He also shared insights into his leadership philosophy and preparation strategies, stating, "From day one, I was clear that the tougher the match, the more aggressive we need to be. In crucial games, we must elevate our aggression."
Gambhir highlighted the importance of supporting players during challenging times, emphasizing that trust is fundamental to team selection. He noted, "You don’t choose a squad based on hope; it’s about trust and faith. Losing trust after just a few matches is not an option."
Further elaborating on his approach, he acknowledged that mistakes are part of the process, saying, "I’m human and I make errors too. Wrong decisions made with good intentions are acceptable, but those made with bad intentions are not tolerated in our dressing room."
He underscored that success is a team effort, crediting everyone involved, from players to support staff, for their contributions. "Success is never attributed to one individual; it belongs to the entire team," he stated.
Looking forward, Gambhir recognized the challenges ahead for India in the longer format of the game, admitting, "Transitioning in red-ball cricket is always more challenging than in white-ball cricket. However, if the team continues to work diligently, we will succeed."
He also expressed gratitude towards Jay Shah, the former BCCI secretary and current ICC chair, for his trust in Gambhir's capabilities, explaining that instinct often guides his decision-making. "I rely on my instincts, which can sometimes be quicker than data, as data can be misleading," he concluded.
