Gautam Gambhir Discusses Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's Future in Indian Cricket

New Delhi, September 18: Gautam Gambhir, the head coach of the Indian men's cricket team, has indicated that 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will need to be patient for his chance to join the senior national squad. He emphasized that players who have consistently performed over the past few years will take precedence over newcomers.
During the post-match press conference following India's impressive 127-run victory against Afghanistan in the final T20I at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Gambhir mentioned that Sooryavanshi would receive a longer opportunity when the time is right.
“From Vaibhav's perspective, it was made clear that he must wait for his opportunity. We recognize his immense talent, but those who have been delivering results for the last 2-3 years will always be prioritized over someone new to the team. When he does get his chance, he will have a longer run as well. This is the essence of Indian cricket—we value competition and talent in the dressing room, and waiting for your turn is part of the process,” Gambhir stated.
Sooryavanshi did not play in any of the three T20Is against Afghanistan, with Sanju Samson taking the field throughout the series.
Gambhir supported Samson's inclusion, asserting that the wicketkeeper-batter's skills and previous performances justified his selection. Samson scored a half-century in the decisive match after achieving another in the earlier game.
“Samson's talent alone warrants his place in the team. He has demonstrated his capabilities. A player doesn't become the Player of the Tournament in a World Cup without possessing significant talent. He has proven himself. It was a tough decision to leave him out during the England series, especially considering his prior performances,” Gambhir remarked.
Gambhir expressed India's desire to revert to the winning combination from the T20 World Cup, noting that a few setbacks do not diminish the quality of established players.
“Sometimes, player form plays a crucial role. In this series, we were clear that we wanted to return to the combination that succeeded during the World Cup. Players do not become ineffective after a few failures,” he added.
India completed a clean sweep of the series with a 127-run win in the final T20I, where Abhishek Sharma scored an impressive 108 runs off just 34 balls, including a rapid century.
Looking ahead to the ODI series against the West Indies, Gambhir acknowledged that the Asian Games schedule impacted player selection but also presented opportunities for emerging talents like Jammu and Kashmir's Auqib Nabi and Punjab's Naman Dhir.
India is set to host the West Indies for a three-match ODI series starting September 27 in Thiruvananthapuram.
“We understand that preparing for a World Cup in a year is not ideal. However, the Asian Games squad was selected well in advance, making it challenging for selectors to assemble the best team. We anticipated that if our top players participated in the Asian Games, we would need to make some compromises for the ODI series against the West Indies,” Gambhir explained.
He added that the upcoming ODIs would allow newcomers to showcase their skills in the white-ball format, thereby expanding India's player pool.
“This series provides opportunities for young players like Naman Dhir and Auqib to demonstrate their abilities in the white-ball format. A larger player pool is beneficial for us. Normally, when all players are available, some may miss out on chances, but now with players like Auqib and Naman, they will have their opportunities. While it's advantageous, we still aim for the best players,” he concluded.
