Gambits Maintain Lead in Global Chess League
Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], September 9: The FYERS American Gambits, currently leading the table, dealt another blow to the Triveni Continental Kings, who are two-time champions, by securing a victory that solidifies their position at the top of the Global Chess League (GCL) standings in Bengaluru on Wednesday.
Earlier in the day, the Alpine APL Pipers had briefly claimed the top position after defeating the CheQ Mumba Masters 11-6. However, the Gambits ended the day ahead of the Pipers, boasting a superior Game Points score after their 8-5 win against the Continental Kings.
In other matches, the Ganges Grandmasters achieved a resounding 15-3 victory over the Triveni Continental Kings, while the Mumba Masters faced a double setback, losing 6-11 to the PBG Alaskan Knights.
Currently, the Gambits, Alpine APL Pipers, and Ganges Grandmasters each have four wins, but the Gambits have played one more round than their closest rival.
As of day five, the Gambits lead with 12 match points and 60 game points from seven matches, while the Alpine APL Pipers follow with 58 game points from six matches, and the Ganges Grandmasters have 55 game points from six matches.
In the final match of the day, Gambits' Candidates 2026 winner, Javokhir Sindarov, secured a convincing victory over Alireza Firouzja on the icon board, with all other matches concluding in draws.
Earlier, the Pipers demonstrated dominance on most boards against the Mumba Masters. World number one Magnus Carlsen secured a solid win against Maxime Vachier-Lagrave in just 31 moves, while Anish Giri maintained an advantage against M Pranesh from the 10th move onward.
Volodar Murzin clinched the Pipers' fourth win in six matches by forcing Bardiya Daneshvar to resign after 52 moves, with D Harika's victory over Divya Deshmukh being the only highlight for the Mumba Masters.
The Ganges Grandmasters also completed a double over the Triveni Continental Kings, this time showcasing their strength with black pieces. Initially, it seemed the Kings had prepared well for the white pieces, aiming for a comeback after a rocky start.
However, Polina Shuvalova of the Ganges Grandmasters, who now boasts five wins from six games, turned the tide against Zhu Jiner, winning in 47 moves. Luke Leon Mendonca capitalized on an error by Pranav V to secure victory on the prodigy board.
Stavroula Tsolakidou sealed the match by defeating former women's world champion Alexandra Kosteniuk in a lengthy 63-move battle.
Later, the Mumba Masters had an opportunity to ascend to the top by defeating the PBG Alaskan Knights with white pieces. They appeared to be on track until the final moments of the match, where Carissa Yip, despite having a favorable position, lost on time against Nino Batsiashvili. Abhimanyu Mishra overcame the disappointment from Tuesday to defeat Bardiya Daneshvar, securing the win and earning the Player of the Match award.
