New York [US], September 7: Frances Tiafoe, the local favorite, secured his place in the US Open quarterfinals by defeating 2021 champion Daniil Medvedev, marking a significant milestone in his career.

The enthusiastic American audience at Louis Armstrong Stadium supported Tiafoe throughout the match, as he advanced to the quarterfinals for the fourth time in New York, achieving his 25th hard-court victory this season with scores of 7-6(1), 6-4, 7-6(6).

“What a match,” Tiafoe expressed, as reported by the ATP's official site.

“Daniil has been exceptional, and he has defeated me numerous times. This is my first win against him in a regular match, so I’m incredibly excited about it,” he added.

The two-time US Open semifinalist is on a quest for his first major title, having lost six out of seven encounters with Medvedev prior to this match. Tiafoe appeared more focused and energized during the nearly three-hour contest, maintaining an impressive 10-0 record at Louis Armstrong Stadium.

In the quarterfinals, he will face fellow American Alex Michelsen.

“Playing on this court has been incredible; the energy is amazing,” Tiafoe remarked after his victory. “It feels like the people’s court, and I’m truly enjoying the atmosphere,” he added.

Previously, Tiafoe reached the finals of the Cincinnati Open, where he fell to Arthur Fils in three sets. In New York, he has won his last three matches without dropping a set, following a five-set victory over Martin Damm in his opening match.

Meanwhile, Ben Shelton is set to face defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals after defeating former world number three Stefanos Tsitsipas with a score of 6-2, 6-3, 6-4.

After overcoming Tallon Griekspoor, Hubert Hurkacz, and Denis Shapovalov in four sets each, Shelton found his rhythm at Arthur Ashe Stadium, eliminating the two-time Grand Slam finalist in just one hour and 51 minutes.

The 23-year-old has now reached his sixth Grand Slam quarterfinal and his second at the US Open, where he previously made it to the semifinals in 2023. Alcaraz has won all three of their previous encounters, but they have not faced each other since the French Open last year.
