Deschamps Addresses Third-Place Match

Miami [USA], July 18: Didier Deschamps, the head coach of France, expressed that his team is reluctant to participate in the FIFA World Cup 2026 third-place playoff against England scheduled for Saturday (local time). However, he emphasized the importance of striving for the bronze medal.

France's journey towards a third consecutive World Cup final was halted by a 2-0 loss to Spain in the semi-finals.

During the pre-match press conference, Deschamps acknowledged that neither team was eager to play this match, yet he reiterated that it is not merely a friendly encounter. He stated that it is their responsibility to compete for the bronze medal.

“I have a responsibility for this game. It is not a friendly. This is a third-place playoff. The players, staff, and I must fulfill this final objective. While it may not hold the same weight as the final, both England and we are in a position where we must play,” Deschamps remarked.

He further highlighted that wearing the national jersey carries the obligation to achieve this goal. Deschamps also mentioned that this match would mark his final game as coach, reflecting on the bittersweet nature of the occasion.

“We need to focus on securing third place and making this goal a reality. I am aware that this is my last match. I don’t want anyone to be upset. While the end is approaching, life continues,” he added.

Defender Ibrahima Konate echoed Deschamps' sentiments, admitting that the players were not keen on playing the third-place playoff after their semi-final exit. However, they are motivated to secure a victory for their departing coach.

“None of us wanted to compete for this third place, but we have no choice. We want to honor our coach,” Konate stated. “He has done so much for the France team, and we need to show our gratitude by doing everything we can to win this game and earn that bronze medal,” he concluded.
