FIFA President Honors Late Portuguese Players During World Cup Match
A Touching Tribute at the World Cup
In Houston, Texas, FIFA President Gianni Infantino had a poignant meeting with Joaquim and Isabel Silva, the grieving parents of the late Portuguese footballers Diogo Jota and Andre Silva, prior to Portugal's inaugural match against DR Congo in the FIFA World Cup 2026.
Diogo Jota tragically lost his life in a car accident in Spain last July at the young age of 28. His brother, Andre Silva, was also involved in the accident and did not survive.
Infantino expressed his heartfelt sentiments on Instagram, describing the encounter as a moment for remembrance and reflection amidst the tournament's excitement.
He stated, "It was a privilege to meet Joaquim and Isabel Silva, the parents of the late brothers Diogo and Andre, before Portugal's opening game against DR Congo in Houston."
He continued, "Diogo dreamed of representing @portugal at this tournament, and while we celebrate these moments together, we keep Diogo and Andre in our thoughts. Thank you for allowing us to welcome you."
This gesture was part of a broader tribute from teams and officials honoring the memory of the late Portuguese players, with emotional messages resonating throughout the football community.

In the meantime, Portugal faced a challenging start to their World Cup journey, settling for a 1-1 draw against a determined DR Congo team.
Initially, Portugal seemed poised for victory after Joao Neves scored a header just six minutes into the match. However, DR Congo responded with a powerful equalizer just before halftime, with Yoane Wissa scoring the nation's first-ever World Cup goal.
Cristiano Ronaldo, making his sixth World Cup appearance, had a subdued performance and was unable to make a significant impact as the match concluded in a draw.
