FIDE's Stance on Candidates 2026

The International Chess Federation, known as FIDE, has responded to worries regarding the upcoming Candidates Tournament set for 2026 in Cyprus. This region is currently entangled in a conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the USA. FIDE has firmly dismissed the notion of relocating the event, asserting that there is nothing even slightly hazardous that would justify such a decision.

Scheduled to commence on March 28, the tournament has raised security concerns, particularly for India's Koneru Humpy, who is contemplating withdrawing due to the situation. Cyprus, located in the eastern Mediterranean, is on high alert following a drone attack on a British air base.

FIDE CEO Emil Sutovsky stated, "Our plans remain unchanged. We are in the final preparations for the Candidates' Tournament. While we are aware of the proximity to conflict zones, Cyprus itself is not engaged in any warfare." He emphasized that there is no emergency and that the situation has stabilized since recent alarming reports.

Sutovsky expressed confidence in the Cypriot government, noting, "This event is significant, and the government recognizes its importance. The President is set to inaugurate the tournament on March 28." He added that while they are considering various scenarios, there are no valid reasons to alter the tournament's location or date.

In the event that Humpy does withdraw, organizers will need to find a replacement, which could pose challenges for the remaining competitors.
