FFF Appeals for Michael Olise's Yellow Card Reversal Ahead of Quarterfinals
FFF Seeks to Overturn Olise's Yellow Card
Paris [France], July 7: The French Football Federation (FFF) has initiated an appeal to overturn the yellow card received by star player Michael Olise prior to their quarterfinal match against Morocco set for Friday.
Olise was cautioned during the round of 16 match against Paraguay, which was marked by intense competition and escalating tensions, leading to physical confrontations. The Bayern Munich forward is now at risk of suspension ahead of the crucial quarterfinals.
The yellow card was issued following a contentious incident with Paraguay's Matias Galarza. Although Galarza claimed to have been struck in the face, video evidence indicated that Olise's contact was merely a tug on his jersey, according to reports from Goal.com.
If Olise receives another yellow card, he would miss a potential semifinal match against either Spain or Portugal. He has been a key player for France, contributing five assists thus far in the tournament.
According to The Athletic, referenced by Goal.com, the FFF has reached out to FIFA to rectify what they believe to be a significant officiating mistake. This appeal arises amidst ongoing controversies regarding red cards in the tournament, including a recent incident where US striker Folarin Balogun had his red card overturned after intervention from US Soccer and President Donald Trump, allowing him to participate in the last 16 against Belgium.
This decision has drawn criticism from the Belgian Football Association, as well as fans and analysts globally.
Olise's five assists are the highest recorded by a player in a single FIFA World Cup since 1994, just one short of the record held by Brazilian legend Pele, who achieved six assists in the 1970 tournament. The Bayern star has also earned two 'Player of the Match' awards during the group stage against Senegal and in the round of 32 against Sweden, where he provided two assists.
His exceptional performance positions him as a strong candidate for the Golden Ball, with past football greats, including French legend Thierry Henry, praising his contributions.
