FC Goa Claims Victory Against Mumbai City FC

Fatorda (Goa) [India], April 18: In a remarkable display, FC Goa secured a 2-0 victory against league leaders Mumbai City FC at the PJN Stadium in Fatorda, Margao, marking the Islanders' first loss of the Indian Super League (ISL) 2025-26 season.

Sahil Tavora and Muhammed Nemil Valiyattil were the goal scorers, with Nemil's stunning long-range shot just before halftime highlighting Goa's dominance. His performance earned him the Player of the Match title, as noted in a press release.

The match began with Goa taking control, showcasing their intent to break through Mumbai City's well-organized defense. Early attempts from Raynier Fernandes and Sahil Tavora indicated Goa's attacking strategy, although Mumbai's defense, led by Nuno Reis and Bijay Chhetri, held strong.

Mumbai City aimed to counterattack, with midfielder Jorge Pereyra Diaz and winger Noufal PN making occasional advances, but clear chances were scarce as Goa maintained the pace of the game.

After winning a header in midfield, Muhammed Nemil was found by Raynier Fernandes, took a touch, and unleashed a spectacular left-footed shot from nearly 35 yards that soared into the top corner, leaving Phurba Lachenpa helpless and igniting the home crowd's excitement.

After the break, Mumbai dominated possession, but Goa's defense, anchored by Pol Moreno and Sandesh Jhingan, stood firm. Attempts from Pereyra Diaz and Lallianzuala Chhangte were either blocked or failed to challenge Tiwari, as Mumbai struggled to find the final touch in the attacking zone.

Despite introducing fresh players in the latter stages, Mumbai's efforts were thwarted by Goa's disciplined defense. Tiwari made several crucial saves, particularly against substitute Vikram Partap Singh, while long-range attempts from Noufal and Chhangte missed the target.

In the dying moments, Mumbai City nearly found a goal when Chhangte sent a dangerous cross across the goal, but substitute Zothanpuia couldn't convert, encapsulating a frustrating night for the Islanders.

As the final whistle blew, FC Goa celebrated a well-earned 2-0 victory, climbing to third place in the standings with 16 points from nine matches. Meanwhile, Mumbai City FC remains at the top with 18 points, but their unbeaten streak has come to an end, intensifying the title race.
