Farveez Maharoof Urges Sri Lanka to Make Tough Choices After T20 World Cup Exit
Call for Accountability Following World Cup Defeat
Colombo [Sri Lanka], February 26: Former all-rounder Farveez Maharoof has emphasized the need for "hard decisions" after Sri Lanka's disappointing exit from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, following a 61-run loss to New Zealand on Wednesday. He described the team's performance as both 'hurtful' and 'shameful.'
Maharoof did not hold back in his critique of the team's display. He stated, "To put it plainly, it’s hurtful, painful, and shameful," during an interview with ESPNcricinfo.
The ex-Sri Lankan cricketer specifically pointed out the batting lineup's failures, highlighting a troubling trend of careless dismissals in a pivotal match.
“The manner in which some batters surrendered their wickets was alarming; nearly every dismissal was a soft one. This mirrors the England match, where all ten dismissals were soft. Continuing this pattern in a must-win scenario indicates that Sri Lanka's batting was below par,” Maharoof remarked.
He noted that these issues are longstanding and require comprehensive solutions rather than quick fixes. Maharoof stressed that it is time for serious discussions about accountability.
“This isn’t the first occurrence. I hope this cycle ends soon, and that tough decisions are made,” he added.
Sri Lanka, who co-hosted the tournament, had advanced to the Super 8s after victories against Ireland, Oman, and Australia, alongside a loss to Zimbabwe. Following their win over Australia, many viewed Sri Lanka as potential semifinal contenders. However, they suffered defeats in both of their Super Eights matches against England and New Zealand, leading to their elimination. Their campaign will conclude with a match against Pakistan at Pallekele International Stadium on Saturday.
Maharoof also suggested that the selectors and coaching staff need to reassess player roles and the team's future direction ahead of their next international engagements.
“After the next game, before the upcoming series, Sri Lanka’s selectors and management should carefully evaluate the players’ capabilities, determining who should remain and who should be let go. I anticipate that some tough decisions will be made in the coming weeks. If not, I would be quite surprised,” he concluded.
