Fakhar Zaman Fined for Umpire Dissent in Tri-Series Final
Fakhar Zaman Faces Penalty for Code of Conduct Breach
Rawalpindi, December 5: During the Tri-series final against Sri Lanka, Pakistan's Fakhar Zaman was penalized for violating the ICC Code of Conduct. He has been fined 10% of his match fee due to a Level 1 breach, as reported by the ICC.
Zaman's infraction involved showing dissent towards an umpire's decision, specifically under Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel.
This incident occurred in the 19th over of Pakistan's innings when Zaman engaged in a lengthy dispute with the on-field umpires after losing his wicket.
Reon King from the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees proposed the sanction, which was supported by on-field umpires Ahsan Raza, Asif Yaqoob, third umpire Rashid Riaz, and fourth umpire Faisal Afridi.
Zaman acknowledged his wrongdoing and accepted the penalties, eliminating the need for a formal hearing.
Level 1 breaches can result in penalties ranging from an official reprimand to a maximum of 50% of a player's match fee, along with one or two demerit points.
In the Tri-series final, Pakistan triumphed over Sri Lanka by six wickets, showcasing an impressive bowling performance that dismantled the Sri Lankan batting order.
After winning the toss and opting to bat first, Sri Lanka started strong with opener Kamil Mishara scoring a solid 59 off 47 balls. They reached 81/1 at one point, looking poised for a competitive total.
However, the Pakistani spin attack led to a stunning collapse, as Sri Lanka lost their last eight wickets for just 16 runs, finishing all out for a mere 114 in 19.1 overs. Mohammad Nawaz was the standout bowler, taking 3 wickets for 17 runs in four overs, supported by Shaheen Afridi (3/18) and Abrar Ahmed (2/18).
Chasing a target of 115, Pakistan's openers Saim Ayub (36 off 33) and Sahibzada Farhan (23 off 22) set a solid foundation with a 46-run partnership. Despite a brief setback from Sri Lankan debutant Pavan Rathnayake (2/11), captain Babar Azam steadied the innings, finishing with an unbeaten 37 off 34 balls. He secured the victory by hitting the winning boundary in the 19th over, leading Pakistan to a total of 118/4 with eight balls remaining, thus clinching the Tri-Series trophy in front of their home fans.
